Fatal, New York 2002

This image, or rather a warning, of a skull holding a phone had been popping up
as I took long walks across the dense metropolis. Its meaning may be open for
interpretation but to me it was clearly a danger sign. In a heated conversation or
text, step off the curb without looking and a car will run you down. Driving while
using the phone is also asking for trouble. Or is it, death is spreading through
technology, a modern twist on the messenger of death? What ever its creators
purpose, it got my eye and had me thinking. In researching, I found the artist
goes by the name “Skullphone,” is Los Angeles based, but other info about him
remains a mystery.

This image interested me because it feels as if the poster had been living on the
wall for a while, the layers of information around it ripe for interpretation. Looks
to me that intentionally or unintentionally the mystery men that took the risk to
write and paste their messages on this wall are having a conversation. This
photo is a record of that dialogue, uniquely site and time specific.
