Now and Then

Using a needle and thread, Santa Monica based artist Gwen Samuels stitches the poses and performances of girlhood. Her work appears to float on the wall, recalling distant memories of playing dress-up now, in adulthood, transformed into the many guises of contemporary womanhood. Custom framed by voila! Gwen Samuels was born in New York. In college she studied textile design at Syracuse University and when she graduated she designed wallpaper. She has experimented with weaving, papermaking, felting, knitting and crochet but never made a wearable garment.
